Wearealreadyawareoftherichlydescriptive,evenevocative,qualityof Marx'swritingsoncapitalistaccumulation-andofthegapbetweenthisambiguoussenseofrealism,ontheonehand,andtherequirementsofrigoroustheory ontheother.Oneconcerninthepresentwork,asalways,istocontributetothe transcendenceofthedichotomyintheMarxistliteraturebetweenanonquantitativefundamentalism,whichdoesnotconfronttheenormousliteratureonthe errorsinMarx'spresentationofhisargument(Sweezy,1942;Samuelson,1971; Blaug,1968;Morishima,1973),andtheelegantbutessentiallystaticlinear modelsalongthelinesofSraffaandvonNeumann.
