ABSTRACT

Family resources, as reflected in individual and household incomes, are, of course, also of some significance in socialist societies for the reproduction of social inequalities. Changes in the occupational structure are clearly not keeping pace with the skills being offered by the educational system. On the whole, a few differences in the basic patterns of social mobility and interaction can be discerned between the Federal Republic and the USSR. Interestingly, the feminization of office and white-collar jobs in the FRG and the United States has shown precisely the opposite pattern. Conflicts of interest arise, and the conflict potential of societies which are not class societies in the strict sense, has also been underscored by Tatiana Zaslavskaia. The opening of channels of information and the revival of cultural diversity satisfies a broader circle of the intelligentsia than the system of privileges hitherto enjoyed by the narrowest of circles.
