ABSTRACT

Previous conceptual work on corporate culture leads to the question, "So what?" or more elegantly, "To what effect?" Despite the often insular way corporate culture is sometimes discussed in the literature, we recognize, as would any sensible person, that all organizations are embedded within a culture, and thus a large part of what corporate culture is said to be is undoubtedly a reflection of the larger societal culture. Also, organizational participants, as Charles Perrow notes (1979), track mud in from the outside, so they bring their cultures with them.
