ABSTRACT

Nature had bestowed upon Sun Chyan a pockmarked face and a pair of oversized ears that stuck out grotesquely from either side of his head. Short of stature and stocky of build, with one shoulder higher than the other and one leg shorter than its partner, he hobbled along with a limp. Still single by the age of thirty-five, he had given up the possibility of marrying. For many years he lived alone in the city of Ding Jou earning his living as a potter.
