ABSTRACT

How was it that Jan Dzung, the powerful emperor of the Middle Kingdom who ruled over China with a mandate from heaven awakened every morning feeling downcast and melancholy? The birds sang in the garden outside his bedroom door, fresh dew glistened in the early rays of the sun, and flowers opened their petals, joyously welcoming the day. But the emperor paid little heed to the beauty around him. He was not content, for he had no heir to inherit his throne.
