According to 1982 government statistics (compiled by the National Tax Administration Agency) there are 1,542,299 corporate enterprises in Japan. Of these, "big businesses," capitalized at over one billion yen, account for only 2,455, a mere 0.2 percent of the total.1 "Very big businesses" capitalized at over ten billion yen amount to just 322 (see table 4.1).
