ABSTRACT

The importance of discrimination in various socialist economies is presumably related to the nature of the labor market, as well as the level of capital accumulation. Hungary has been a socialist society with more or less full employment, as well as a level of capital accumulation or industrialization that most closely resembles that of the USSR. Hungary, like all socialist countries, has encouraged women to contribute to the paid labor force. The greatest concentration of Gypsies in the world can be found in Central and Southeastern Europe. Other Hungarians take a more paternalistic view of the Gypsies, emphasizing their childlike character, lack of industriousness, criminal tendencies, and irresponsibility. Czech Gypsy experts will defend the segregated high-rise apartment buildings as being necessary to maintain Gypsy support systems at this stage in their development. To test the hypothesis, there is more pressure on the superpowers than on the non-superpowers to provide affirmative action for minorities, including women.
