ABSTRACT
The educational activity of the World Bank in China might be viewed as the combined contribution of OECD countries to Chinese educational reform. Its scope is naturally far more extensive than the resources of any one country could make possible, with the result that it touches most echelons of the higher education system, from national to local, and most geographical regions. Up until the mid-1980s, the focus of World Bank support was on higher education, by Chinese choice, and 183 higher institutions, nearly one-fifth of China's total, had received assistance. A consideration of the massive transfer of knowledge and technology made possible through eight higher education projects thus makes a fitting final chapter for this study of China's universities and the open door.
