ABSTRACT

ThesecularlyrisingandrecordtradedeficitsthathavebeenregisteredintheU.S. accountsinrecentyearsandallegationsofdeindustrializationoftheU.S.economyhavefocusedpublicattentionontheinternationaldivisionoflabor(IDL)and theroleoftheU.S.inthatdivision.Few,ifany,analystswouldbelikelytodeny theroleofinternationaltradeandcompetitionindeterminingthepositionofthe U.S.intheIDL.Therefore,thetraditionaltheoryofinternationaltradeprovides oneapproachtothedeterminantsoftheIDLandtheU.S.positionwithinthe globalallocationoflabor.
