ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the renewable flows with a rather brief look at India relatively marginal source and end it with a detailed appraisal of the rich hydroenergy capabilities. One of the beneficial legacies of the heightened worldwide interest in energy affairs has been emergence of a more systematic look at resource endowment. China has an ancient tradition in extracting coal and natural gas. Local preindustrial burning of coal was not uncommon in many other countries with outcropping coal seams, but drilling for salt water in landlocked Sichuan led to numerous discoveries of natural gas in province. Interior areas receiving plenty of solar radiation are among the windiest places in China, again the consequence of the influence exerted by strong seasonal pressure cells. Chinese oil and gas potential has been a frequent topic of unbounded speculation since the early 1970s when the Chinese, in order to attract Japanese purchases and investment, started rumors about a new Saudi Arabia in the making.
