ABSTRACT

The Chinese National Committee on Aging has called for better care for China’s 80 million people over sixty. It is expected that the aged proportion of the population will rise from the present 8 percent to 20 percent in the year 2025. There are many different ways in which old people can play a role, such as acting as advisers and consultants, taking part in Party rectification work, carrying out investigative research, presenting critical proposals, and writing books.” The policy of each couple having only one offspring implies that eventually many a middle-aged couple will be obliged to look after four old people in addition to a child. Pensions have been suggested to relieve the financial burden, but only a few people are currently receiving these.
