ABSTRACT

Aside from real estate, other forms of property were taken and are supposed to be returned as part of the drive to “totally negate the Cultural Revolution.” Some were even directly or indirectly involved in ransacking people’s homes and confiscating property. Some have illegally reaped great benefits from the confiscation of property. Not only were homes confiscated, but also office buildings and houses of worship. Groups who lost their offices included industrial and commercial associations and the minor “democratic” parties. The belongings were supposed to be kept in government storage, and there have been calls to “throw the warehouse doors open.” In February 1983, the heads of two Henan “specialized households” who had engaged in food processing and fishing were detained because of their business activities.
