ABSTRACT

The publication of Piero Sraffa's Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities brought an access of strength to the anti-neoclassical polemic, but at the same time it led to a secondary controversy on that side of the question. We are united in rejecting neoclassical ideology in all its manifestations and in attempting to restore and adapt to modern problems the classical theory disinterred by Piero Sraffa. As is natural at the frontiers of a new movement, there are some disagreements amongst us. Garegnani distrusts expectations as introducing an illegitimate element into long-run theory, but surely an economic decision must be taken with a view to its future consequences, which cannot be fore-known exactly; this applies with particular force to decisions about accumulation. Garegnani uses the long period as an element of his criticism of 'inter-temporal equilibrium.
