ABSTRACT

The most voluminous collection of general documents and articles on the subject is in the innumerable publications of the Department of Agriculture itself, together with the output of the experiment stations. The only journal devoted solely to the history of agriculture is Agricultural History, a quarterly published since 1927 by the Agricultural History Society. The standard histories of the West include discussions of settlement and sometimes have references to agriculture, aside from the cattle-herding industry. The part played by transportation in the marketing of Southern crops, and in the general agricultural development of the section, is revealed in many places. The standard histories of the West, listed in this bibliography under "Agricultural Settlement," tell a great deal about the geographic conditions, and contain occasional information about farming, but, as far as general agriculture is concerned, they naturally dwell mainly on its most prominent phase, herding.
