ABSTRACT
The farmers' plight had been notably lessened, hard-pressed homeowners had been assisted or rescued, and here and there slum spots had been cleared. National resources had rescued the whole banking system, loaned as generously to distressed industrial enterprise, come to the relief of farmers, rebuilt the Tennessee Valley, protected homeowners, and fed millions of the unemployed. Farmers were enjoying an increase in prices of their staple crops far greater than the advance in prices of things farmers bought. Economic revival in the United States dated from the outbreak of war in Europe in September, 1939. The defense and war experience stood in contrast to national efforts during the depression. The demand of war was superior, for the crisis was immediate and the issue would be decisive. The advance in production as a percentage of capacity was spectacular in certain industries which were in midstream of war demand.
