ABSTRACT

Women’s political participation has been recognized internationally as an important measure of the status of women in any particular country. In China, concerns over women’s political participation caught national attention when the percentage of women cadres in national, provincial, and local party/government offices dropped to an all-time low in the 1980s. While the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) state has implemented various measures to address the situation, and has been eager to broadcast any tangible improvement since the 1980s, gender politics surrounding Chinese women’s political participation remains under-explored.
