ABSTRACT

Arguably one of this country's premier collections, the Library of Congress collects in all areas except medicine and technical agriculture. Items are in many formats, and most items are available through interlibrary loan. There are two search options: a word search or browse. Browsing is a much more general search, and most records used in this type of search are available at any time Monday through Friday; they give an indication of the library's holdings in a certain area, but not call numbers for specific works. A word search is more specific and available only during the hours stated above, and the types of materials one can search are also limited. The library also makes available its experimental search system, which has only 10 percent of the library's holdings entered. Two major improvements over the current catalog are the possibility of browsing a shelf without being in the library and performing a search for "related" materials.
