ABSTRACT

This chapter presents all basic political, economic, and demographic data on a territorial unit of the Russian Federation. Aleksandr Bokovikov was elected governor of Evenk Autonomous Okrug on 16 March 1997 after almost four months of election controversy. Bokovikov had initially been announced the victor in gubernatorial elections held 22 December 1996, yet inconsistencies in the results of the elections caused them to be annulled. The governor appears to have good relations with his Siberian neighbors. In June 1997 Bokovikov signed an agreement with then Krasnoyarsk Krai Governor Valerii Zubov stating that Evenk Autonomous Okrug is a constituent part of the krai and that its residents can vote in the krai’s gubernatorial and legislative elections. Geologists believe that Evenk might be sitting on a diamond mine, which could transform the region’s economy, now based primarily on hunting and trapping.
