Reforming the Dragon’s Tail: Chinese Military Logistics in the Era of High-Technology Warfare and Market Economics
In China’s military hierarchy, the logisticians have traditionally been of secondclass status. But their importance has grown since the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) began in the early 1990s to focus its attention on how to fight limited hightechnology wars. Logistical support is at the heart of this new operational doctrine, especially the need for rapid mobility, intensive supply of materials, and forward technical support. Consequently, logistics modernization has become a high prior ity in the PLA’s quest to build a twenty-first-century fighting force.
