ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the history and development of networked television in Alaska, which uses low power transmission technology as part of its distribution system. It also describes the current status of low power television stations (LPTV) in Alaska and comments on the future possibilities for telecommunication services there. Telecommunication services in Alaska depend upon the infrastructure established by the LPTV network. LPTV in Alaska demonstrates a unique concept in delivering network programming to the population of the state. The State of Alaska delivers network programming to Alaska's citizens using a separate network distribution system that utilizes satellite and LPTV technology. The Alaska Rural Communications Service (ARCS) replaced Rural Alaska Television Network (RATNet) in a new, rural location and took on the commitment to provide a mix of meaningful, substantive, and entertaining programming to 248 rural communities.
