Individual Donors in the 1996 Federal Elections

Individual campaign contributors were the most important source of funds in the 1996 federal elections, despite record soft money expendi tures by political parties and interest groups (see chapters 7 and 8). According to the Federal Election Commission (FEC), individual con tributors provided some $1.5 billion in federally regulated donations. This figure included $126 million given directly to presidential nomi nation campaigns (which enabled those campaigns to obtain an addi tional $56 million in public matching funds); $444 million given directly to Senate and House candidates; $401 million to PACs, and $533 million to the Republican and Democratic Party committees.
