ABSTRACT

November 1947 marked the United Nations’ decision to partition Palestine, still under the British mandate, to form an Arab state and a Jewish state. It was not until the winter of 1948 that the ordinary people in Palestine came to the realization that the Arab liberals and heroes who had persistently warned against impending disaster were right to fear a plot by the Allies against the Arabs. Our ancestors had had to face invasions before. European Christians had fought holy wars against them. Indeed, the destiny of Palestine has always been determined by outsiders. This latest round of crusades would feature the Israelis as the winners in the Holy Land.
