ABSTRACT

This chapter presents guidelines on maintaining service hot water systems. The information presented may readily be applied to the types of service hot water systems typically found in commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities. It should be noted that the maintenance activities identified in the chapter and their recommended frequencies represent the minimum recommended level of maintenance to be performed on these systems. Systems supporting critical operations will require additional and more frequent attention. The chapter determines the components of a service hot water system that are defined to include the system's water heater or heat exchanger, the control system, the storage tank, and the distribution system. Although building service hot water systems are relatively small users of energy in most facilities, they offer an opportunity to make significant cuts in both energy and water requirements. Maintenance programs for service hot water systems are easy to establish and are not labour intensive.
