ABSTRACT

During the period from 1953 to 1955, a board was established at the direction of the assistant secretary of health and medicine of the Defense Department, to review the Korean War experience. In the fall of 1954, a policy was announced that voluntary retirements would again be authorized. When word was announced in a press release by the public information officer of General Headquarters that the author was returning to the United States to retire from the service, the Japanese leaders with whom had been working so many years came as individuals and as groups to express their appreciation for the work which people had done in attempting to establish or re-establish health and welfare activities in the rebuilding of that nation during the preceding few years. Various professional groups, such as the Japan Medical Association, the Japan Pharmaceutical Association, the governmental groups, including the prime minister, and the family of the Imperial household, sent tokens of their gratitude.
