ABSTRACT

Neo-classical elements productive today may be well-established ones which are compound-elements in the classical languages, and which have been current in English for some time. Neo-classical compounds in which the first element is a combining form and the second a full English word. A few compounds of neo-classical form appear to be composed wholly of native elements, linked by a combining vowel. A feature of many modern neo-classical compounds which might bring objections from followers of Fowler is the variations of form which can be seen in different instances of the same element. In spite of the long-standing hospitality of English to words and word-elements of foreign origin, hybrid words have often been condemned in strong terms. The Applications Technology Satellite now in orbit carries an experimental electrothermal engine called a resistojet. Hatcher distinguishes two semantic groups, the 'name' group, for example Indo-European, and the 'appellative group, for example politico-religious.
