ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the development of strategic processing over time. Two frameworks will be used to describe changes in strategy use. The first framework, Overlapping Waves Theory, described changes in children's strategy use and has primarily been used with younger children. Siegler and Jenkins described Overlapping Waves Theory (OWT) as part of a broader developmental framework similar to Piaget's developmental framework. The second framework, the Model of Domain Learning (MDL), described changes to individuals' strategy use as they develop expertise in an academic domain and has mostly been used with adolescent and adult learners. According to the MDL, the three components to developing expertise in a given academic domain are knowledge, interest, and strategic processing. Knowledge comes in two forms— domain knowledge and topic knowledge. Domain knowledge refers to the breadth and scope of subject-matter knowledge. Topic knowledge refers to the depth of knowledge about a specific content related to a domain.
