ABSTRACT

The process of reading has been defined as the interaction between reader and text. Reading strategies have both been investigated in the research literature as strategies for reading in their own right as well as strategies that can be used for learning about another domain. In the context of reading strategies, the reader comes to the reading situation with a set of cognitive and metacognitive strategies for reading, but in addition to coming to the text with particular skills and strategies, attributes of the text also influence the use of those strategies. Guessing the meaning of a word in context is the strategy of using the words that surround the unknown word to guess at that word's meaning. With regard to the surface-level cognitive strategies, there are two strategies that involve connecting parts of text together: Making connections to prior text, Predicting the micro or macrostructure of the text.
