ABSTRACT

An impromptu speech is one that is developed on the spur of the moment. When delivering an impromptu speech, people have little time, if any, to analyze the subject, audience, or occasion. A manuscript speech is one that is completely written out in advance. It is used in situations where the presentation must be very precise. A memorized speech is written out as a manuscript speech and then committed to memory. Extemporaneous speeches are the most widely used speeches in public speaking. Like the manuscript and memorized speech, the extemporaneous speech is carefully prepared in advance. Effective extemporaneous speakers usually develop their speeches on note cards utilizing phrases and keywords as opposed to long sentences. In extemporaneous deliveries, the speaker knows what they are going to say in the introduction, body, and conclusion of the speech but decide on the exact wording of the speech at the moment of delivery.
