ABSTRACT

Nie Que asked Wang Ni four questions, not one of which Wang Nicould answer. Nie Que leaped up delighted and went to tell Puyizi, who said, “Have you only learned that now? Shun was not equal to the ruler of Tai. Shun acted with benevolence to prevail over men. He did prevail over men but he did not prevail in what was beyond man. The ruler of Tai slept in tranquility and awoke in simple contentment. He sometimes imagined that he was a horse and at other times that he was an ox. His knowledge was real and free of doubt. He did not work with what was confined to man.”
