ABSTRACT

As a safeguard against robbers who break open trunks, searchthrough bags and break open cabinets, people secure them with straps and locks. This is usually said to show prudence. When a great robber arrives, however, he lifts the boxes, holds up the trunks, carries off the cabinets and runs off with them, concerned only that the straps and locks may not be secure enough. In this case, what was regarded as the wisdom of the owners is nothing but keeping the things for the great thief. Let me try to explain this. Those who are regarded as wise-have they not prepared the way for robbers? And those who are regarded as sages-are they not the guardians of the interest of the robbers?
