ABSTRACT

By now you realize that your own study of history in film will require substantial research in print and electronic materials. What follows is a guide to both primary and secondary materials that will help you to explore the production, content, and reception of the film material you are studying, as well as its historical context. You should identify and examine enough primary sources to make them the basis of an original work of scholarship. You also will want to find as many relevant secondary sources as you can to support your own insights with the work of those who have worked on your topic or related topics. The discovery of an article or book on exactly the same topic can be dismaying, but you may not have to start over: changing the focus of your research may still allow you to make use of the resources you have identified and studied.
