ABSTRACT

This mechanical organ, made of painted wood, was carved and manufactured in Mysore, India, around 1793. It offers a graphic representation of the reaction of many Indians to British control of India through the British East India Company, a control that had become increasingly formalized in the late eighteenth century. Inside the tiger is an organ, which can be accessed by a hatch in the side. Next to the hatch is a metal crank that, when turned, operates the organ.
