ABSTRACT
When Germany conquered Poland in September 1939, 2 million additional Jews suddenly came under German control. Most were Yiddish-speaking and unassimilated. On touring Poland in November, Joseph Goebbels referred to them as “animals”—a collective “waste product”—but also as “predators with a cold intellect, which have to be rendered harmless.” 1 But how would this be done?
