ABSTRACT

Could the Holocaust have happened without Hitler? The debate over the specific role of the Fuehrer in the annihilation of the six million continues, but whatever conclusion historians may reach, Hitler’s hatred for Jews was clearly central to the Shoah. His ability to call upon the darkest of human instincts is a terrifying admission. Perhaps psychologists will someday discover why the highest ranked species among the mammals destroys its own kind more savagely than any other. For now, there are many theories but no answers.
