ABSTRACT

For physically the individual is a production of the species, metaphysically a more or less incomplete image of the Idea that, in the form of time, displays itself as species. In agreement with the relationship expressed here, the greatest vitality, as well as the decrepitude, of the brain and genitals occur together and are related. Accordingly, in India the lingam, along with the yoni, is revered as the symbol of the species and its immortality and, as the counterpoise to death, ascribed as an attribute precisely to Shiva, the divinity presiding over death. Procreation is to a certain extent the most marvelous of the mechanical drives, and its work the most amazing. In accordance with all this is the important role played by sexual relations in the human world, where it is really the invisible center of all doing and driving and, despite all the veils thrown over it, peeps out everywhere.
