ABSTRACT

The Beer Hall Putsch and Hitler’s subsequent imprisonment proved a significant turning point in his career. Hitler saw clearly the need for a change of tactics. TheNazis could not achieve power by a frontal assault on the Weimar Republic but would have to work within constitutional or legal means. This meant the creation of a mass political party that would actively compete for votes with the other political parties in Weimar Germany. Hitler, having regained faith in himself and ever the opportunist, guided the Nazi Party through this transformation.
