ABSTRACT

In “What Are Comics?” an article published in the second edition of this reader, Greg Hayman and I proposed the following definition:

I am no longer convinced that our characterization is adequate, but I also believe that it is worthy of further attention. Its weaknesses reveal the difficulties inherent to the philosophical project of giving an account of comics. And its strengths provide a way to understand the sometimes-confusing relations between comics, cartoons, and animation.
