ABSTRACT
Americans have always held the idea that they are not a militaristic people; that wars have been relatively few and always justified; that no better evidence for this tradition exists than in the small size of the American Army during peacetime from the American Revolution to World War II. The pervasiveness of colonial wars is blamed on the imperial connection—colonists unable to avoid the wars of their mother country.
