ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the techniques to visually communicate information and some standard guidelines for visual information presentation. It then attempts to illuminate the electoral role of gender, using tables and charts. Both the simple table and the line graph are useful primarily for describing and summarizing information. With some slight transformation of the data, however, it is possible to use graphic techniques to analyze or interpret these numbers as well. Tabular and graphical devices must be used appropriately. Misleading presentation of findings is harmful, whether accomplished through the subtle abuse of the techniques or through careless misuse. A tremendous variety of tabular and graphic presentations may be created using standard software packages. Common programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, or Power Point, for example, have interactive tools and templates to produce a wide range of presentation-quality tables and charts.
