ABSTRACT

Remember looking at college information when you were in high school? You went to Web sites and heard stories from others who had visited various colleges. Recall how you had heard others talk about the college you were planning to attend, but you really wanted to tour the campus yourself to see if this was the place for you. My first foray into college occurred about four years after high school, when I decided to try to take some classes at the local community college. I had seen it hundreds of times: It was only about ten miles from my apartment, and it sat on a low hill about a mile from the major freeway in the area. I had even visited its pond and fed the ducks. But before signing up for any classes at Gavilan College, I wanted to walk around the buildings, meet some of the instructors, and learn more about what people actually do in college.
