ABSTRACT

Film noir producer Dore Schary said he believed that the writers had

the most liberal influence on film noir. Raymond Chandler and Dashiell

Hammett were perhaps the most influential people in what was to become

the film noir “movement.” Their private detective pulp novels were made

into films and Chandler wrote the screenplays for several others. But most

significantly they established a new style of character which was very well

received by the film-going public, the hard-boiled wise guy.
