ABSTRACT

The concept of volunteering is well documented and is generally hailed as a valuable contribution to society, particularly within the western world, although it is clear that it is a phenomenon found across the globe and is a fundamental part of the most societies. In Australia, the sport and physical recreation sector attracted the largest number of volunteers in 2010. Sport helps create a sense of cohesion, and bound people through shared emotional connections which lend to a sense of community. Linking volunteering and sport within an international context is a more recent phenomenon with much of the research focusing on events. The field of sport volunteering in an international context is clearly both dynamic and diverse with a range of opportunities. The events industry has rapidly expanded, and demand to volunteer at sport events has risen considerably in recent decades.
