ABSTRACT

If sport is a vehicle for engaging in development it would seem a natural progression for volunteer tourism companies to use sport as the basis for part of their project portfolio. Whilst both volunteering and tourism are not new concepts, the bringing together of them as 'volunteer tourism' is a relatively recent phenomenon. Volunteer tourism is also known as voluntourism, international volunteer tourism, volunteering for development and international volunteering. Projects Abroad is the largest volunteer tourism organization in the UK and arguably across the world. The volunteer stories are just that, they are a story about their volunteer trip. Whilst some write more about the sporting aspect than others, all have some reference to their sporting project. It is clear from the volunteer stories that there were a number of challenges in teaching sport in many of the destinations, because of a lack of necessary equipment, poor quality training facilities and large class numbers.
