As I will argue, the comma in the first line is no boon to our understanding of this passage. According to Tarrant, however, there are several indications that the passage had not attained its final form. This is not my view. Although taking the passage correctly in a distributive way, whereby separate clauses introduce Latinus and Turnus, Tarrant finds interea reges to be an abrupt opening and reges a doubtful designation to suggest Latinus and Turnus.1
