ABSTRACT

Among more recent commentators only Robert Coleman has briefly dealt with the syntactical issue faced by readers of 74–81: "aut Scyllam goes closely with aut . . . narrauerit as direct object to loquar: 'Why need I mention either Scylla . . . or how Silenus narrated . . . ?' Alternatively it could be taken with aut . . . mutatos . . . artus as direct object to narrauerit: 'how he narrated either <the tale of> Scylla . . . or the metamorphosis . . . '; but this is less likely."
