3 Apart from the strange sense of arista, accepted by TLL (s.v. 1. 580. 41ff.) cf. Servius: et quasi rusticus per aristas numerat annos. It seems to have been the prevailing ancient interpretation and possibly influencing the other late occurrences of this metonym.
