ABSTRACT

As many students of Vergil's Georgics will have experienced, the subtlety of the poetic texture and the richness of learning displayed is such that re-readings tend to generate a lot of second thoughts and new ideas. The fact that eminent scholars have edited and commented upon the poem in scrupulous detail in the course of the last generation is more likely to give rise to still more questions than diminish such a response and settle old disputes.2
