ABSTRACT

with the added comment in the critical apparatus: versus praeclarissimos iniuria poeta abiudicaverunt editores plerique. Hopefully nobody will subscribe to such a verdict in the future. Roland Austin's brief and authoritative article in the Classical Quarterly (1968), 107ff. excellently helped by his own commentary on the First Book (1971) and Roger Mynors' text (OCT 1969), seems once and for all to have turned the scales against this ancient excrescence among recent editors. Today both G.B. Conte's Teubneriana (2009) and the Spanish Alma Mater editorial project (2009-11) have rightly rejected these lines.
