ABSTRACT

On medio Horsfall is in doubt whether to take it is a dat. of goal (as does the TLL 8. 587.60-1) or as an ablative, either local or 'of extension' ("perhaps better"). What bothers me is that the parallels will not quite do: The best among those referred to by Horsfall is A. 4. 184 volat caeli medio terraeque on which more will be said below. This is clearly a local ablative that we justly and adequately call an ablative 'of extension'. Venit in our line, however, is so clearly ingressive (which volat is not) that it is perfectly understandable that Bulhart in his Thesaurus article found that he should classify it as a dative of goal.
