ABSTRACT

This chapter presents some of the technologies used to make alternative fuels viable. Most manufacturers' systems are similar but as always someone should refer to their technical information before carrying out any work on their vehicles. On Volkswagen Golf BiFuel LPG vehicle, all components that are required for gas operation are factory fitted. Normal petrol/gasoline operation is available as with any other version. The Volkswagen HyMotion, like all fuel cell vehicles, is powered by electricity in the same way as a battery-electric car. The fuel cell stack consists of many individual cells that generate electric power for the electric motor through a chemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen. The fuel cell stack, which was in the centre tunnel of the generation model, was made significantly smaller. Even though the state-of-the-art fuel cell stack is smaller than in its predecessor, the FCX Clarity, it has a higher power output.
